Théâtre Royal in Marrakech, Morroco
Inaugurated in 2001, the half-finished Théâtre Royal on Avenue de France in Morocco has an elaborate portico and Egyptian Art Deco foyer (designed by Tunisian architect Charles Boccara) which mask an unfinished interior. Designed with a 1200-seat open-air theatre and an 800-seat opera house the interior’s concrete and protruding rebar provide an architectonic sense of stage and multi-layered seating that is uncannily cavernous. Even in its unfinished state, the Théâtre Royal regularly hosts shows (magical and other), receptions, concerts and exhibitions such as the Marrakech Biennale.
