Christ Episcopal Church Rectory

ARCHITECT: Karin Patriquin

PROJECT GOALS: Karin joined the Rectory Restoration Project of Christ Episcopal Church, in Guilford, CT, to prepare a scope of work for exterior rehabilitation and renovation, and to provide historic architectural insight. This house adjacent to the church on the historic Guilford Green predates the church’s structure.

RESULTS: Studies of titles dating to the early 1800s in the Town Hall’s vaults and work with Guilford town historian Joel Helander led to the discovery that the structure had been inaccurately dated. The story of the original family’s life, and reasons for the building’s asymmetry and other quirks, were revealed through these and other documents. Renovations were respectful of the original building, while keeping to a strict budget. Original windows were simply repaired and covered with modern stormwindows, the original entry door was repaired and repainted. The clapboards which needed to be removed were carefully documented in drawing form so that new clapboards were placed similarly, over a newly insulated structure. Details which would have been added later than the original construction (cornices on the windows, for example) were not replaced. The restoration brings back the original grandeur of this 1820 house and business of William Todd, Esquire.
