Residence, Guilford, CT
ARCHITECT: Karin Patriquin
PROJECT GOALS: This house was designed for a growing family, a home office, accessible guest suite, and space for entertaining. The site is a densely forested piece of land near the center of Guilford, CT. The siting of the house was limited by wetlands, findings of ledge close to grade on most of the building area, and the resulting large area required for a septic system.
RESULTS: By locating the house relatively close to the street, the bulk of the forest, with its seasonal wetlands, is protected. A cleared side yard, necessary because of septic requirements, creates ideal locations for various gardens and brings sunlight deep into the house. The most public spaces are on the South, while bedroms and the home office are on the more private North side. Because the house sits atop ledge on a steeply-sloping site, views from the top floor of the house are akin to those from a treehouse.
