These are terms from the world of Re-Design.
REDESIGN
- To make a revision in appearance or function
- A redesign often includes an evaluation of the existing design and the findings of the redesign needs are often the ones that drive the redesign process.
Our collaboration with Clover Design for Zinc’s new look is a REDESIGN.
REBRANDING
- The creation of a new name, term, symbol, design or a combination of them for an established brand with the intention of developing a differentiated (new) position in the mind of stakeholders and competitors
- This may involve radical changes to the brand’s logo, brand name, image, marketing strategy and advertising themes.
The process of re-designing the interiors, the signage and the new name for Kitchen Zinc is a REBRANDING.
REDEVELOPMENT
- Process of demolition of the existing improvements and construction of new improvements on a site. The new improvements are often a different type from the old
- The demolition of old buildings and the creation of new buildings on the same site. Redevelopment can solve existing problems of congestion and poor design but, for residential areas in particular, it is seen to be wasteful of resources, destroying communities, and creating urban deserts until building takes place.
The design of the Chestnut Building in Branford, an office and residential mixed-use building, replacing a former multi-family house, is a REDEVELOPMENT.
GUT AND REHAB
- Rehabilitation of a building that includes removal, or gutting, of most of the nonstructural interior construction; may include removal of partitions, architectural finishes, and mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- The restoration or repair of a building that includes the removal and rebuilding of the interior, often including the trim, windows and doors, mechanical and electrical systems, and sometimes including non-structural exterior elements such as siding and roofing.
The design of Tritown Family Practice, in an office condo complex in Essex, is a GUT AND REHAB.

TENANT FITOUT
- The physical products and spaces controlled by the individual inhabitant or occupant used to make habitable space in a base building. Fit-out can change without forcing the base building to change.
The design of FuZion Medical Aesthetic Boutique, within the Chestnut Building, is a TENANT FITOUT.
/
RETRO-FIT
- The process of installing new mechanical, fire protection, and/or electrical systems or equipment in an existing building; often required to meet current building code requirements
- The addition of new building materials, building elements, and components, not provided in the original construction
- To fit in or on an existing structure, such as an older house.
